Surf’s Up in Cape May, Swimming is Out

By Jack Fichter

CAPE MAY— The surf is up in Cape May and swimming is out, according to Cape May Beach Patrol Capt. Buzz Mogck as of Saturday morning Aug. 22.
Strong rip currents and undertow has raised the red flags on the beach here. Folks going to the beach will need to be content with sitting on the sand. Surfers and boogie boarders will be allowed in the water but they will be closely watched by lifeguards.
A high surf advisory is effect until 6 p.m. Sunday Aug. 23. A small craft advisory is also in effect.
Waves are expected in the range of seven to 10 feet Saturday afternoon increasing to eight to 12 feet overnight.
Seas are expected to subside to six to 9 feet on Sunday.
The surf temperature in Cape May was 79 degrees, very comfortable for surfers who concentrated on the Cove and Poverty beaches.
