Traffic Stop Lands Two in Jail for Drugs, Other Offenses

POLICE LIGHTS DAYTIME

NORTH WILDWOOD – A Wednesday afternoon drive in the city ended with a stop at the Cape May County jail for two Salem men after two city police detectives saw them commit multiple traffic violations.

The men were subsequently charged with drug possession and other crimes.

Detectives Joseph Kopetsky and Vincent Deritis conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle operated by James Sheeley, 52, for traffic infractions on Wednesday, April 10, at around 3:40 p.m.

The detectives learned that there was a warrant for Sheeley’s arrest out of Salem, and he was found to be in possession of heroin, drug paraphernalia and an unlawful knife.

A narcotics K9 alerted officers that more narcotics might be inside the vehicle. A search warrant was granted, and during a search of the vehicle officers discovered heroin, cocaine, suboxone and tramadol as well as drug paraphernalia, some of which belonged to Sheeley’s passenger, Tyler Hutton, 31.

Sheeley was charged with fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon; second-degree certain persons not to possess weapons; third-degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a disorderly persons offense. He also was issued several traffic citations.

Hutton was charged with third-degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, a disorderly persons offense. He too was issued traffic citations.

In New Jersey, in the case of a traffic-related drug possession offense, both the driver and passengers can be charged with possession if drugs are found during a traffic stop. The law carries a minimum fine of $50 and a mandatory two-year driver’s license suspension upon conviction.

Both men are being held at the Cape May County Correctional Center.
