Enjoy the fire of the music of sunny Spain at the Bay-Atlantic Symphony’s next concerts on January 24 and 25.
Entitled “Phantoms and Fire,” the performances will take place on Saturday, January 24, at 8 p.m., at the Frank Guaracini, Jr.
Fine and Performing Arts Center, Cumberland County College, Sherman Avenue and College Drive, Vineland; and on Sunday, January 25, at 4 p.m., at the Richard Stockton College Performing Arts Center, Jimmie Leeds Road, Galloway Township.
The concerts, conducted by Music Director Jed Gaylin, will feature Manuel de Falla’s El Amor Brujo (Love, the Magician), ballet music rich in melody and atmosphere, with such memorable sections as the Ritual Fire Dance.
Returning as the featured soloist will be the American mezzo-soprano Fenlon Lamb, who ignited Bay-Atlantic Symphony audiences in concert performances of Verdi’s Rigoletto.
She will also open the concert with songs and arias that explore some of the same themes as in El Amor Brujo.
Both Bay-Atlantic Symphony performances will be preceded one hour prior to starting time with a “Pre-Concert Conversation with the Maestro.”
Gaylin, now in his 12th season as Music Director of the Bay-Atlantic Symphony, is also the Principal Conductor of the Cape May Music Festival. He works regularly with the Sibiu Philharmonic of Romania, where he is Principal Guest Conductor.
A much sought-after guest conductor throughout Europe, he has appeared with such orchestras as the Accademia del Gran Teatre del Liceu of Barcelona, Spain, for repeat engagements, as well as the Bucharest Radio Orchestra, Lodz Philharmonic, and the Moscow Chamber Symphony.
Lamb has garnered critical acclaim for her “dynamic, rich vocal sound” and “polished acting abilities.”
The critics also raved over her Dorabella in Opera Santa Barbara’s production of Mozart’s Così fan tutte, her role debut as Rosina in the Sacramento Opera’s production of Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and the title role in Handel’s Agrippina in Baltimore.
Tickets for the Guaracini Fine and Performing Arts Center performance are $30 for adults, $26 for those age 55 and over, $15 for students, and $8 for children, and may be ordered by calling the box office at 856-692-8499.
