Visit the zoo at night

By On Deck Staff

his Wednesday is your last opportunity this summer to visit the Cape May County Zoo during the evening. The zoo will be open Wednesday, August 27th until 7:45 p.m. There will be live music from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. with The Geno White Trio performing in front of the zoo entrance. The Cape May County Zoo, which is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year, is open late during July and August to provide residents and visitors an opportunity to experience the zoo in the evening. Freeholder Director Dan Beyel said, “By staying open late on Wednesdays, our visitors are able to enjoy the beach and other attractions during the day and then come to our free zoo, listen to music and take a leisurely stroll through the zoo.”Just a few years ago, the Cape May County Park and Zoo was often referred to as “the best-kept secret in Cape May County.” “Today as we celebrate our 30th Anniversary, that phrase is no longer true. Our zoo has steadily gained popularity and the distinction as one of the area’s top attractions”, added Beyel.Located off Garden State Parkway Exit 11 on Route 9 one mile north of Cape May Court House, the Cape May County Park and Zoo has more than 250 species of animals – and approximately 550 animals call the zoo home! Lions, Tigers and Bears can be found at the zoo along with cougars, bison, cheetahs, and even a camel named, “Charlie”. The zoo provides information about each species of animal and there are placards that provide facts about the flora that surround the zoo.
The Cape May County Park and Zoo has a sprawling African Savanna home to zebras, giraffes and ostriches that distinguishes the zoo as one of the most unique on the East Coast. Other exhibits include an aviary, “The World of Birds,” home to more than 20 species complete with lush vegetation and a cascading waterfall, a reptile house with exhibits of exotic reptiles and amphibians from all over the world and new this year a Bald Eagle exhibit. The Cape May County Park and Zoo opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 4:45 during the summer except on Wednesday nights when it is open until 7:45 p.m. through August 27, 2008.
