Those restaurants need not be in the previously zoned, alcohol sales permitted, 96th Street main business district, to sell wine. Voting against the measure was Councilman Karl Giulian, who lives on 83rd Street near Sea Salt Restaurant, and who has maintained opposition to the change in policy from the outset. Giulian said he feared wine licenses will lead to similar brewery licenses for those same restaurants. Applicants must get state approval prior to selling the wine, which means it is unlikely any restaurant will be able to secure the licenses this year. Licenses will only be granted to restaurants for consumption on premises with meals, and only when food is served with the wine. See next week’s Herald for more details.
