RIO GRANDE – A 73-year-old homeless man was found dead in a wooded area behind Joe Canal’s Plaza in Rio Grande, police confirmed.

Middle Township Police Department said that officers located the body of Rodney Frazier in the woods off Rio Grande Avenue, Feb. 1.

Lt. Tracey Super said Frazier’s death appeared to be of natural causes pending toxicology reports. Frazier’s name was not initially released pending notification of family members; however, Frazier was known to local organizations giving assistance to the homeless.
According to Super, the Middle Township Police Department was able to contact Frazier’s family through a third party.

In December 2017, a 50-year-old homeless man was found dead at a makeshift campsite in a wooded area behind Walmart. Richard Mutumba was a native of Uganda and was suffering serious medical problems. Mutumba’s death was investigated by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and the Southern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, but the results were not automatically released.

His death was noted by a group from Cape Hope, which attended a Board of Chosen Freeholders (now County Commissioners) meeting held two days after Mutumba’s death.

A wheelchair-bound homeless man named Timothy McCart, 47, was killed in March 2015 after being struck by an automobile.
