WOODBINE – Mayor William Pikolycky announced that Cape May County has begun work on the elimination of the existing all-way stop condition at the intersection of County Route 610 (Dennisville-Petersburg Road) and County Route 550 (Woodbine-Ocean View Road) with replacement by a roundabout.
According to a release, the roundabout will permit approaching traffic from all directions to proceed slowly at a controlled rate through the intersection without the need to stop.
Roundabouts have proven to be an effective means of reducing traffic conflicts and minimizing side-impact accidents since vehicles enter the roundabout at an oblique angle.
The Woodbine roundabout is being funded as part of the Federal Highway Administration’s Highway Safety Improvement Program grant.
Except one overnight closing, vehicle and pedestrian access will be maintained during construction.
In addition, signage will be installed indicating that local businesses are open. Once construction begins, the existing flashing stop light will be removed, and traffic will enter and exit the intersection on expanded paved shoulders without the need to stop.
Motorists are urged to use caution as traffic patterns will vary throughout construction.
The completion is projected to be the end of June.
Any inquiries or questions during the construction work should be directed to the Office of the County Engineer at 609-465-1035.
“Although there will some inconvenience during the construction of this roundabout, the outcome in regards to safety improvement and traffic circulation will far exceed the inconvenience during this period,” added Pikolycky.
“This has been a long-planned initiative of the state, county, and borough to improve the road conditions of this busy intersection,” the mayor concluded.
