The waves were crashing and the sun was shining in Sea Isle City as surfers from across the nation competed in the 2008 Oakley-Heritage Pro Junior Surfing Competition over Labor Day weekend.
The contest, which was an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) grade-2 event, took place on the resort’s 40th Street Beach.
In addition to plenty of great surfing, spectators at the event also enjoyed food vendors, music and a Red Bull Tow-At demonstration, during which stunts and tricks were performed as jet skis towed surfers along the breakers. There were also free items up for grabs when an air-powered “bazooka” launched tee shirts and other items into the crowd.
In the end, Cory Arrambide, 19, Ventura, Calif., took home first place honors and the top cash prize of the day. Arrambide, who also won the 2007 Oakley-Heritage Pro Junior Competition in Sea Isle City, was all smiles when he was handed a check for $2,500 during the award ceremony.
Local surfer Rob Kelly, 18, Ocean City, placed second overall. Nat Young, 17, Santa Cruz, Calif., placed third, and Trevor Sanders, 18, San Clemente, Calif., finished fourth.
The Labor Day weekend competition in Sea Isle City was just one in a series that will ultimately lead to the championship round. With only three stops remaining on the North American tour, advancing competitors are focusing on the Billabong World Junior Championship in Narrabeen, Australia, during which the top five ASP North American seeds will have the chance to display their talents and gain international attention.
