Beginning Monday, Sept. 15, the curbside pick-up of trash and regular recycling will revert back to the winter schedule, once weekly. At that time, property owners from First to 44th streets will have Wednesday pick-ups, 45th to 70th streets will have Monday pick-ups, and 71st to 94th streets will have Tuesday pick-ups.
All trash and recycling items should be left on the curb by 6 a.m. on the day of collection.
According to code chapter 18, all trash and recycling intended for curbside pick-up should be placed in rigid containers with lids. Also, no plastic bags should ever be left standing on the curb.
Recyclable paper items, including newspapers, magazines, junk mail, cardboard and office paper should be placed in paper bags before being put on the curb.
Rinsed glass bottles and jars, aluminum and tin cans, and plastic containers marked with the codes “1” and “2” (in the recycling triangle), should all be placed in the same rigid container, as they are collected together. Trash should be placed in a separate rigid container with a lid.
The municipality offers many other recycling options in addition to the regular trash and recycling curbside pick-ups. Electronics, such as televisions, stereos, computers and telephones, can all be dropped off for recycling at the city’s recycling yard, 4001 Kneass Ave., adjacent to the town’s causeway bridge.
Used clothing, hard plastics (such as outdoor lawn furniture and toys), as well as rechargeable batteries, computer printer cartridges, and metal items (such as grills, door-frames and aluminum furniture), can also be dropped off at the Kneass Avenue location.
Brush will be collected curbside on the fourth Thursday of every month from Oct. 1 to May 31. However, brush must be bundled and less than four feet in length. Clean grass clippings can also be recycled, however clippings must be dropped off at the recycling yard by homeowners.
There is also a city-wide curbside bulk trash collection scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 25. After that date, regular bulk trash will be collected curbside October through May on the first Thursday of the month for First to 44th streets, on the second Thursday of the month for 45th to 70th streets, and on the third Thursday of the month for 71st to 94th streets.
The city’s recycling yard is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends until Sept. 15. Then the yard will be open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 7:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. through the winter.
Property owners can also pick-up recycling labels for their curbside containers at the drop-off area.
