A Night at the Races, which was sponsored by Friends of Tourism on April 28 at the Yacht Club, was a sellout with 150 in attendance.

People were actually turned away because of the limited size of the dining room. More than $5,000 was raised with the proceeds after expenses are going to the Tuesday Family Fun and Flick Nights, being co-sponsored by the Tourism Commission and the Chamber of Commerce.

Race winners were given tickets to bid on various prizes donated by local businesses.

Two auctions were held on prizes valued at more than $300. Highest bidder was Bill Donato, who bid on a weekend at Colonnade Hotel, and Jack Devine and Joe Maguire, who bid together on a week at a beach home in
Cape Hatters.

A 50/50 of more than $300 was won by Kevin Deely, who donated $100 back to the sponsors.

About 120 volunteers of all ages, including Boy and Girl Scout Troops and a group from the South Jersey Parrot Heads, cleaned beaches from 1st Street to Townsend’s Inlet.

The volunteers filled data cards listing the debris found on the beaches. The cards were collected by Clean Ocean Action of New Jersey, which will forward the data to Ocean Conservancy to track trends of marine debris in the world’s oceans.

For their good work, the volunteers were treated to free tee-shirts from Clean Ocean Action and buffet luncheon compliments of Ocean Drive Bar/Restaurant.

As of May 15th, dogs are prohibited from the beaches and promenade, parking meters will be effect, and it’s the last day to purchase a discount seasonal beach tag.

The Mayor says that the city ordinances pertaining to parking meters and dogs on the beach and promenade will be strictly enforced.

In addition, the Mayor advises motorists to obey parking meter regulations, especially parking overtime or in handicapped parking spaces.

The 15 minute grace period for parking meters, a program inaugurated by the Tourism Commission twelve years ago, will continue this summer.

Instead of a ticket, the owner of a car with meter that has expired will get a 15 minute warning to move the car or insert more money in the meter.
