Students from Margaret Mace School learned the ABC’s of liberty on Monday, June 16, at a school assembly to celebrate Flag Day and honor New Jersey veterans and active members of the armed forces.
The patriotic program included songs sung by the school’s youngest children, and a oral presentation of an alphabet of American History, from “A is for Abraham Lincoln” and “Bill of Rights” all the way through the alphabet. The students received a standing ovation from local veterans, who were invited as special guests to the show.
The students presented representatives of the Disabled American Veterans of New Jersey (DAV-NJ) with $950 that they raised by selling flags in honor of veterans they know. The money will be used toward a DAV program that purchases videophones that allow deployed troops to better communicate with their families at home.
State Commander Joseph Harris said that the videophone program is close to his heart, and it helps military families stay close during difficult times.
“We didn’t have anything like this when we served,” Harris said. “We are going to run this program as long as they’re over there serving…as long as we need to.”
He thanked Margaret Mace students and teachers for their support, and the students thanked the veterans for their sacrifice and service.
DAV welcomes donations toward their effort, and they run online electronics store that helps fund videophone purchases for troops. To find out more about how you can support local service members and veterans, especially those injured in battle, visit davnj.org.
