COURT HOUSE – After weeks of multiple candidate forums and meetings with voters in the campaign for Middle Township Committee, Independent candidate Steve Russell issued the following statement:
“I have thoroughly enjoyed the various candidate forums and voter meetings that I have participated in during the last few weeks. Speaking to voters from each section of the township has given me much insight into the issues of the campaign as well as the challenges facing many of our citizens in the future.
These conversations have also highlighted many positive programs and records of success in the Township that should be continued. For example, in recent years, the Township Committee,
•Eliminated benefits for part-time employees,
•Reduced the size of our municipal government by reducing the number of township employees,
•Realized over $500,000 in savings by putting trash collection out for bid and changing health benefit providers without affecting employees’ coverage,
•Revived the Township’s Environmental Commission, which I am the chairman of,
•Expanded recreational opportunities at the Goshen recreation complex for all families,
•Sought major improvements for the Martin Luther King Recreation Center in Whitesboro,
•Established the Middle Township Economic Development Council,
•Advocated for the preservation of the historic Whitesboro School.
As you can see, Middle Township is a great place to live, full of energetic people, significant resources and limitless potential. However, over the last few years, our town has changed. This change brings with it new issues that require careful consideration and sound planning for the future.
And that is what this election is all about: the future. The future will be bright for Middle Township as long as we maintain the quality of life that we have come to enjoy, and as long as we elect leaders who can put the interests of the Township ahead of any competing outside interests. As the issues continue to become more challenging, they must be tackled with energy and by people who are truly committed to Middle Township.
I offer my passion, energy and commitment to once again ensure that Middle Township is setting the standard for good government, not just measuring up to it.”
