One of the features of Ocean City’s Doo Dah Parade is the PieAsco held at the finish of the march in front the Music Pier.
Folks sit in grandstands and when legendary comedian Soupy Sales gives the signal they smoosh each other in the face with shaving cream pies.
This massive mess has been widely covered in the media, which has caused concern among the conservative faction of Doo Dah’s Board of Governors.
They believe that PieAscoites are resorting to primitive smooshing techniques instead of mastering the finer points of plastering. They say that this “doesn’t reflect well on Doo Dah.”
There is a liberal “Let ‘em Fling” faction of the Board that disagrees but they are in the minority. They were unable to stop the conservatives from scheduling a pie smooshing seminar and press conference on Thurs., March 19 at noon.
The event will be held at Ward’s Bakery, 730 Asbury Ave., and feature Walt Homan, who prepares the pies for the PieAsco.
Homan is not taking sides in the controversy.
“I just make the pies,” he says. “I’m not into politics. I have both conservative and liberal friends…I don’t want to lose any business over this.”
Homan will demonstrate how the pies are made and various smooshing techniques.
He is obligated to spend most of his time on the majority view showing how maximum coverage is possible with efficient “almost poetic” techniques. A few liberal members are expected to show up to try to disrupt the proceedings.
“I m torn between both factions,” says Mark Soifer, a founder of the Doo Dah Parade who started the PieAsco 10 years ago. “But then I’ve always been a wishy-washy person.”
Mark will bring his petite Poodle Mix, Sweetie Pie Soifer, to the seminar and plans to teach her how to smoosh him in the face. “Hopefully she’ll be able to do this for our April 11 Woofin’ Paws Pet Competition as an Intelligent Pet Trick entry. She’s a Soifer.
She should know all about this stuff.”
The conservative faction has grandiose plans. They are determined to establish an American Piedols Competition. Participants would strive to perform the most artistic pie smooshing techniques. The winners would be declared American Piedols and be honored at the Doo Dah Parade.
The public is invited to this educational event. Call Doo Dah Central, 609-525-9300 for information. On weekends call 609-364-4010
