WILDWOOD CREST – The Wildwood Crest Fire Prevention and Inspection Bureau was notified Jan. 17 by the Wildwood Crest Fire Department of a generator possibly running inside of a multiple-family dwelling at 7011 Pacific Ave.
Fire Official Daniel Dunn and Fire Inspector Ron McGowan responded. Upon the fire official’s arrival, he noticed a generator running on the second floor of the building. He entered the property and immediately shut the generator off to stop the buildup of carbon monoxide in the building.
When the fire official initially entered the building, there were high readings of carbon monoxide on the second floor where the generator was running.
At that point, further investigation revealed that there was still electric on to the property. Subsequently, it was discovered that the electric meter had been removed by Atlantic City Electric Company. After the removal, somebody apparently “jumped” the meter and allegedly, illegally obtained electricity from the pole.
Atlantic City Electric was notified immediately. The utility arrived and terminated electric power to the building at the pole.
An imminent hazard order was issued by the Wildwood Crest Fire Official, and the building was ordered vacated immediately due to numerous violations of the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code.
The Wildwood Crest Fire Prevention and Inspection Bureau remind the public to never operate gas-powered equipment inside or immediately adjacent to any occupied building.
This is a dangerous condition that can lead to potential tragic consequences due to the accumulation of carbon monoxide.
Additionally, every home and business should be equipped with a working carbon monoxide alarm.
