Local journalist, Jacob Schaad, will speak at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Lower Township Public Library, 2600 Bayshore Road, Villas.
Schaad’s autobiography, “No Time to Retire,” recalls many stories–some humorous and some sad—he experienced as a veteran newspaperman for 68 years, 18 of which he worked as a courthouse newspaper reporter.
Schaad raises some provocative issues, questioning whether journalism should establish its own ethics committee, such as in the legal and medical professions, and whether a defendant’s rights are violated when photographers are allowed in the courtroom to take photos of defendants in prison clothes, shackles and handcuffs.
Schaad’s long career which began at the Paterson Evening News continued at the Philadelphia Bulletin, The Inquirer, The Press of Atlantic City. He was a full-time reporter for the Gazette Leader publications in Cape May County.
Schaad spent almost 12 years as news editor for Upsala College and served 39 months in the Army Air Corps as a writer during World War II.
Schaad interviewed such movie stars as Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Gregory Peck, Cary Grant and Jane Fonda. He covered major murder trials including the first Hurricane Carter case and the Edgar Smith trial, both of which attracted national attention. And he interviewed former President Harry Truman. Schaad is a resident of Lower Township.
Copies of the author’s book will be available for sale and signing.
