Among Shakespeare’s plays, Hamlet is considered by many to be his masterpiece.
Among actors, the role of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, is considered the jewel in the crown of a triumphant theatrical career.
At 8 p.m. on Monday July 14, Cape May Stage will present a reading of Hamlet, Shakespeare’s timeless tale of murder, love, and revenge.
Shakespeare’s longest play which immortalized the line “To be or not to be: that is the question:” and the advice “to thine own self be true,” begins in Denmark with the news that King Hamlet of Denmark has recently died.
The play vividly charts the course of real and feigned madness—from overwhelming grief to seething rage—and explores themes of treachery, revenge, and moral corruption.
Last season, the Equity theatre presented MacBeth, the first installment of the new tradition, “Shakespeare in the Dark.”
Performed to a packed house, Executive Director Joe Pannullo is excited the Stage is bringing back the series again, especially after the success of last year’s reading.
“The fact that we were able to give people the opportunity to enjoy something of this artistic quality and make it free for everyone and anyone to attend was such a thrill for us,” Pannullo states.
“It’s my hope that this reading of Hamlet will have the same appeal, so we can continue to bring live Shakespeare to the residents and visitors of Cape May.”
Hamlet will be presented at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse of the Cape May Stage.
While tickets for this performance are free of charge, the organization will be accepting donations at the time of the performance.
