WOODBINE – The Borough of Woodbine has been awarded NJDOT grant funding in the amount of $200,000.
This funding is for the second phase of the reconstruction of portions of Heilprin and Sumner Avenues and will continue a project which was also funded by NJDOT in the amount of $397,000 and will complement an upcoming high-priority County project for the reconstruction of adjacent Webster Avenue which is already under design.
It will allow the Borough to continue and complete a project the first phase of which had been funded under the Discretionary Aid program and which phase has been completed. This additional funding would allow the Borough to complete this portion of an ongoing and much-needed abatement project to correct the flooding problem in this area.
These roads are in need of improvement including the installation of stormwater facilities to correct recurrent flooding problems. Both Heilprin and Sumner are the only access for the properties along said roadway and interconnects to the downtown residential area thus providing an alternative bypass route to and from downtown. This area historically floods during storm events due to the lack of a drainage system and the Borough has experienced flooding within the project limits.
The County is presently designing a multimillion dollar project on the adjacent Webster Avenue roadway which is a NJ Transit Bus Route and it is important that the drainage component on Heilprin be coordinated with the County Route 638 project. This project will greatly benefit residents, schoolchildren, pedestrians, and motorists and serve also as a traffic calming measure.
“I wish to express our appreciation to NJDOT and our Federal and State Legislators who supported our application. Without their assistance we would not have been able to make numerous necessary infrastructure improvements without incurring financial hardship for our tax-payers as the Borough lacks the local resources to complete and perform the improvements. This award will allow the Borough to achieve local goals in an effort to promote economic growth, provide for a better quality of life and reduce negative socioeconomic impact and  will now allow us to now complete this pressing project—which is fully shovel-ready– in full,” added Mayor Pikolycky.
