WILDWOOD ─ Within three years, the City of Wildwood should have reduced flooding and updated infrastructure, according to Christopher Damico, head of Public Works. In the words of Mayor Ernie Troiano, officials spearheaded a master plan to “rebuild Wildwood from the ground up.”
Beginning in 2018, an overview was conducted by City Engineer James Oris. He submitted his findings to City Commissioners.
The city was divided into sections, according to problematic areas. Repaving streets, replacing sidewalks and curbs, and updating infrastructure compose the bulk of the project.
According to the mayor, sections of underground pipes have not been replaced since the turn of the 20th century.
Damico explained the city’s recent initiatives Oct. 21. In conjunction with South Jersey Gas, the city repaved a section, including Leaming and Bennett avenues, in 2018. The goal for 2019 was to pave south of Rio Grande Avenue and west of Park Boulevard. Over 30 blocks have been repaved, said Damico.
While streets are repaired, South Jersey Gas installed new check valves for gas lines. Over 1,000 check valves are needed.
The next phase, set for 2020, will include Hildreth and Lake avenues. The infrastructure work will coincide with Cape May County’s pump station project.
Damico said phase 1A is funded by the New Jersey Transportation Infrastructure Bank at low-interest rates. The Infrastructure Bank is designed for municipalities to borrow money for such projects. Grants from federal and state agencies are also being sought, including the state Departments of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Transportation (DOT).
Troiano said better roads and infrastructure will improve residents’ quality of life.
