WILDWOOD — Wildwood residents could go to the polls on Dec. 8, now that the petitioners behind the effort to oust two city officials from office have enough signatures to trigger a recall election.
City Clerk Christopher Wood, who also serves as the recall election official, notified Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr. and Commissioner Bill Davenport by letter that the number of signatures, 729 signatures for Troiano’s recall and 713 signatures for Davenport’s recall, are enough to have an election. Those figures were determined following a trial and manual count by Superior Court Judge Raymond Batten.
Troiano and Davenport now have five business days to decide whether they will resign from the three-member City Commission.
Davenport said he would not resign and Troiano said the recall movement was unnecessary and would only end up costing taxpayers more money.
Troiano also said that he disputed Batten’s findings and expected to appeal Batten’s decision.
Both Troiano and Davenport are able to appeal the decision, however Wood would not encourage the city to appeal. In a letter to City Solicitor Marcus Karavan, Wood said, “After reading Judge Batten’s decision on the (the recall), and mulling over the options, I’ve de-cided against recommending that the city appeal his ruling. I believe further delays in the recall process are not in the best interests of the residents and taxpayers of the city of Wild-wood.”
