WILDWOOD – The Wildwood Police Department, along with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) New Jersey Division, invites the public to participate in this year’s National Take-Back Initiative Oct. 26.
According to a release, the initiative addresses vital public safety and health issues. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription medications are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.
To address this problem, the Drug Enforcement Agency, in conjunction with state and local law enforcement agencies throughout the state, are launching the Take Back initiative.
The goal of the program is to allow citizens of New Jersey the opportunity to rid their homes of unused, unwanted, or expired medications by turning them in to law enforcement officials who in turn can dispose of the controlled dangerous substances in a safe and non-hazardous manner.
The initiative prevents these medications from failing into the hands of juveniles or into the illicit market places in our communities. It should be noted that hypodermic syringes and other sharp instruments will not be accepted at the collection site.
In this year’s initiative we will be accepting vape pens and other e-cigarette devices at the collection site, only after the consumer has removed the batteries. It is important to stress that we will not be responsible for removing the batteries from these devices.
Chief Robert Regalbuto of the Wildwood Police Department invites the community members to take advantage of Operation Take Back in Wildwood, which is being held at the Wawa, 3200 New Jersey Avenue, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This year’s Operation Take Back is being held in conjunction with this agency’s Coffee with a Cop program, which will take place at the Wawa during the same hours.
As always, citizens are welcome to utilize the project medicine drop box located in the lobby of Wildwood Police Department Headquarters seven days a week,24 hours a day, for the disposal of their unwanted prescription medications.
