CREST HAVEN – Joan Vicari was honored by freeholders Jan. 22 on being named the 2018 New Jersey Association of School Librarians Outstanding Specialist.
The Ocean City High School (OCHS) librarian since Aug. 15, 1983, Vicari is the school’s first person to hold that title. She was hired, according to the resolution passed by freeholders, as the district was planning the first OCHS Library Media Center.
Since then, Vicari has “mentored 26 librarians, inspired 13 former students to become librarians, received the Ocean City Educational Foundation Grant to provide more online resources for the students, and founded the school’s Student Environmental Association.” The latter works with the city to plant dune grass, paint drainage grates, and assists with beach cleanups.
Further, the resolution added that her “favorite part” of the job is linking students and staff, not only to print and online resources but also to each other.
District Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Taylor accompanied Vicari and briefed the board on Vicari’s work. That included the library which she termed, “an absolutely beautiful setting. The whole environment is warm, inviting and caring.”
Further, she noted, Vicari “really made it future ready.”
Vicari, who wore a skirt, adorned with books, told freeholders, “I love what I do every day,” she said. She continued that she wants to make students “lifetime learners and citizens.”
Thinking toward Valentine’s Day, Vicari said one of the activities students are participating in is making Valentines for troops overseas.
“Every day gives the entire school community an opportunity to connect and reach out,” Vicari said.
