WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D-2nd) released the following statement on The Never Forget the Heroes: James Zadroga, Ray Pfeifer and Luis Alvarez Permanent Authorization of the Sept. 11th Victim Compensation Fund Act being stalled in the Senate:
“Recently in the House, we voted on a bill that I believe to be completely obligatory and necessary. The Never Forget the Heroes: James Zadroga, Ray Pfeifer and Luis Alvarez Permanent Authorization of the Sept. 11 Victim Compensation Fund Act, is one that has gained attention, and rightfully so.
“The current $7.4 billion fund, which goes out to the brave first responders to the tragedy on Sept. 11, 2001, is expected to run dry by December 2020 and administrators recently cut benefit payments by up to 70 percent.
“This all while more than 2,000 firefighters, police officers, federal agents, and other first responders have died from 9/11-related diseases and many more fight for their lives today.”
“Time is limited, let’s get this done and support the brave heroes of this immense tragedy. I call on all members of the Senate to do what is right and support this 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund Act as it comes to a vote next week. We owe it to the brave victims of this attack.”
