TRENTON – Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D-1st) issued the following statement Sept. 23 on reports that major backers of the North Jersey casino proposal have suspended their campaign after polling showed weak public support for the effort:
“I’m pleased to hear that major financial backers of the plan to put casinos in North Jersey have suspended their campaign. Locating casinos outside of Atlantic City would further harm an already fragile economy in South Jersey, so their abandonment of this effort is good news for the region.
“We still have to be vigilant and talk to residents about the importance of this issue for the future of deep South Jersey. I continue to believe that if gaming facilities are built elsewhere, we’ll see more and more casinos in our area fold, and thousands more jobs lost.
“While this is a blow to the North Jersey casino effort, our work is not done. We now have to make sure the proposal is defeated at the ballot. I’m committed to working with my colleagues, neighbors, and friends to make sure that happens.”
