WEST WILDWOOD – With the help of a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), West Wildwood’s streets and catch basins will be cleaner than they have been in more than a decade.
July 17, borough officials gathered to officially take possession of a 2015 four-and-a-half cubic yard, regenerative air street sweeper that will bring an end to the decades-long practice of borrowing apparatus to keep borough streets clean.
Funding for the purchase of the street sweeper was part of a capital improvement bond approved by borough voters.
“The truck cost $145,000,” explained Borough Administrator Christopher Ridings. “Helping to offset the cost was a $43,000 grant from the USDA. Without them, this purchase would have been unobtainable.”
According to Commissioner Scott Golden, the borough had been without a street sweeper for more than 10 years. “We borrowed when we could,” he said. “But other municipalities are just as busy as we are, which made it difficult.”
“Now that we have our own machine, we will have a regular schedule,” Ridings said, “rather than in the past when it was hit or miss.”
Ridings said the new sweeper was scheduled to make its maiden voyage through the streets of West Wildwood July 20.
