OCEAN CITY — The Ocean City Police Department responded to a shoplifting in progress complaint at Stainton Square in the 800 block of Asbury Avenue, on Jan 16, at 2:44pm. The store employee reported that two black females had just been in the store and were believed to have taken an item of clothing off of one of the display racks. This item was described as a woman’s suit. When the store employee confronted the subjects a verbal argument started and the suspects left the store.
When the officers arrived a description of the suspects was provided and a search of the building was conducted. The building contains other retail stores along with a ministry on the second floor. As the officers searched the building they were advised by another store owner that two suspicious black females intentionally hid from the officers during the search on a second floor stairwell. He further advised that he observed the black females leave the store via a rear exit into the alley. The officers were able to locate both suspects in the alley a short time later.
The suspects were identified as the two women that had previously been in the store that reported the shoplifting incident. A search of the area where the suspects were seen hiding revealed several clothing items that had been removed from the store. These items totaled $1,574.00 in value. Included in these items was the suit that was reported taken during the initial investigation. Also recovered were several dresses, accessories and miscellaneous clothing items.
A follow up investigation was conducted that revealed a suspicious vehicle parked in front of Stainton’s Square on Asbury Avenue. Discovered in that vehicle were several additional items of clothing that are believed to have been taken from stores in Atlantic City. At the time of this release that investigation is still ongoing with the Atlantic City Police Department.
Arrested and charged on warrants issued by Judge Richard Russell, JMC, were Dorothea E. Flonnary, 51, and Clara Stevens, 47, both of Wilmington, Delaware. Bail was set at $20,000.00 full cash. The subjects were later transported to the Cape May County Correctional Facility. The investigation was conducted by Ptl. Dave Rowland, Ptl. Nancy Wisham, Sgt. Brian Trostle and Sgt. Dave Hall. The follow up investigation is being handled by Det. Dan Lancaster.
