Training in ADA to Be Offered to Cultural Groups

COURT HOUSE – “ADA: Beyond the Basics,” a workshop sponsored by the county Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Culture and Heritage Commission, is set for Oct. 2, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Atlantic Cape Community College, 341 Court House – South Dennis Road here.
This program will be for people who already know the basic rules of complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).Topics will include Programmatic Access, 10 key elements to make an accessible Web Site, ADA Compliant Seating and Comfort for audiences of performing arts groups, Historic Displays and Exhibitions, Labeling and Signage, Communication and more.
Each participant will receive a facilities checklist for evaluating their own site or sites that are borrowed for events, a guide to mounting accessible exhibits and a copy of the 2008 Manual of ADA Resources in New Jersey.
Anna Aschkenes, executive director of the Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission, will direct the workshop. She has been an ADA trainer for over 10 years on behalf of the National Endowment for the Arts and also for the Cultural Access Network of NJ. In 2003, the NJ Commission on Recreation for Persons with Disabilities awarded Ms. Aschkenes the Evelyn Aronow Dolan Citizens Award for “her efforts over the last 20 years, to serve people with disabilities” through innovative programming.
Registration fee of $8 is due by Sept. 25 and includes a continental breakfast.
