WILDWOOD CREST – Construction on Sunrise Park will begin next week, according to Mayor Don Cabrera. The beachfront park renovations will include an interactive water fountain, gym equipment, and new playground equipment.
The permit for the project was approved in April. Cabrera says construction should be completed by mid-June. A grant, from the county’s Open Space Fund, will cover 75% of the renovations, leaving the borough responsible for the remainder.
A parking lot, which was proposed on part of the three-square-block space, was strongly opposed by residents, and the plans were scrapped by commissioners in February (https://bit.ly/2ScuxfZ).
The approved permit also includes the work that would be required to reconstruct the fishing pier, widening and heightening it, so it would reach the water and go above the new dune line to be installed by the Army Corps of Engineers (https://bit.ly/2x9wJNU).
Cabrera said the project would cost $6-9 million, but hoped now that the permitting is in place to start the work, it will be easier to get the funding needed to get the job done.
