PETERSBURG – At the Upper Township Committee meeting Aug. 26, Engineer Paul Dietrich reported a beach replenishment project for Strathmere is anticipated to be put out for bid by the Army Corps of Engineers by the end of September.
Dietrich said there has been a loss of beach throughout Strathmere, and that the beach at the north end of Strathmere has lost a significant amount of sand over the past year.
It is expected that much of the sand used in the replenishment project will be taken from Corson’s Inlet between Strathmere and Corson’s Inlet State Park. The replenishment work, which could begin in the fall or winter, will be combined with a planned beach project in Ocean City.
Dietrich said that in the coming year, New Jersey will have one of the busiest years for beach replenishment, and that could lead to a shortage of necessary equipment. He noted, however, that Strathmere is near the top of the queue.
It is anticipated that the beach replenishment project would be completed by March 2020.
