Stone Harbor Releases 2008 Police Statistics

By Leslie Truluck

STONE HARBOR – Councilman Thomas Cope, chairman of the Public Safety Committee, reported borough police activity at council’s meeting Feb. 17.
There were 129 vehicle stops, which resulted in 27 moving violations, seven adult arrests and two juvenile arrests. Also, there were 35 open doors and windows and 52 calls for heater lights, he said.
Cope said it’s important residents be diligent about calling the police if they notice their neighbors’ houses are open because most homes are vacant during off-season.
Officers are knocking on residents’ doors during routine checks to introduce themselves to try to be more involved with the public, he said.
“If an officer is knocking on your door, please don’t turn and run,” he joked.
Year-end figures for 2008 include 527 moving violations, more than 3,000 parking violations, over 2,000 vehicle stops and 242 arrests.
There were 524 incidents of open doors and windows, 106 active investigations, 195 medical emergencies, 117 fire calls and 85 alarms.
The Detective Division has 110 ongoing investigations. One recently resulted in the arrest of a 30-year-old man from Pennsylvania who was charged with impersonating a police officer in a case that began in October 2008, Cope said.
