TRENTON– The State Senate has defeated a bill to legalize gay marriage, leaving it unlikely the state will have a gay marriage law in the very near future.
The bill needed 21 votes to pass; only 14 senators approved the measure Thursday.
The bill is not likely to pass when Republican Chris Christie becomes governor. Democratic Gov. Jon S. Corzine had promised to sign the bill if approved by the Legislature, but Christie said he would veto it.
Suzanne Forrest, of Ocean City, drove to Trenton to support the bill. After the bill failed to pass she told the Associated Press “I thought there was a lot of hope and a lot of caring and compassionate people (speaking up for the issue). There just weren’t enough open hearts.”
She said her partner, Melody Perri, watched on television at home because she wouldn’t be able to stand the tension.
“It’s about love, it’s about civil rights, it’s about all the right things,” Forrest said. “I would like to see this in New Jersey some time in my life. Some suffragettes never lived to see women vote.”
