South Jersey Gas to Begin Construction in Cape May as Part of Storm Hardening

CAPE MAY – South Jersey Gas (SJG) wants to alert residents, business owners, and motorists in Cape May that work will begin on or about Nov. 28 (weather permitting) to convert the natural gas infrastructure system from lower to higher pressure throughout the city. 
SJG is performing this work to enhance and protect its infrastructure in advance of future significant weather events as part of its System Hardening and Reliability Program.
Installation of 2”, 4”, 6” and 8” yellow plastic natural gas mains will take place along Massachusetts Avenue, East Avenue, Vermont Avenue, West Avenue, Missouri Avenue, Indiana Avenue, South Street, Philadelphia Avenue, Michigan Avenue, Madison Avenue, Maryland Avenue, Cape May Avenue, Wenonah Avenue, Sewell Avenue, Swan Avenue, Beach Avenue, Patterson Avenue, Mt. Vernon Avenue, Pacific Avenue, York Avenue, Myrtle Avenue, Windsor Avenue, 1st Avenue, 5th Avenue, 6th Avenue, Jefferson Street, Howard Street, Lafayette Street, Franklin Street, Jackson Street, Perry Street, Grant Street, Broadway Street, Mechanic Street, Moore Street, Congress Street, and Park Boulevard.
The program’s primary focus is to upgrade lower operating pressure distribution systems. Lower pressure systems, by nature, are more susceptible to water intrusion during significant storms with flooding conditions. By upgrading this infrastructure and associated operating pressures, SJG is working to ensure the continued operation of its system during and after a major storm event. All work is coordinated with the appropriate local, county, and state entities.
All excavations will be restored on a daily basis. A temporary repair will be made in most cases until the final restoration can occur. Openings in concrete may be temporarily patched with asphalt until final restoration with concrete can be scheduled. Openings made in grass in the winter season may not be restored until the spring in order to facilitate grass growth.
Final restorations and paving in the area is anticipated to be completed by the spring of 2017. All restorations are completed in compliance with local and county regulations.
SJG or its contractors will contact customers to gain access to properties with gas service to complete this work. Crews will work Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. There is also a possibility that work will be performed with city approval during the same time frame on some Saturdays to accommodate customer appointments.
