SEA ISLE CITY – City council approved the introduction of an ordinance Sept. 27 to update encroachment setbacks in the island municipality.
According to solicitor Paul Baldini, the new ordinance adjusts “bump out” requirements for side yards. The term “bump out” refers to a way to expand a home while legally “encroaching” into setback areas.
“The modification reduces the minimum distance to enhance aesthetics and allow for more architectural flexibility to get away from a ‘long-wall’ feeling reminiscent of the 1980s,” explained Baldini.
“Bump-outs will be available still on undersized smaller side yards,” the solicitor explained.
Specifically, to cover most situations, the ordinance provides for “all yards that are seven feet or greater in width, projections for decorative, ornamental or canopy overhangs over exterior doors or windows are permitted to extend up to two feet into the yard setback.”
The second reading and public comment is scheduled for the Oct. 25 council meeting.
