SOMERS POINT – Shore Medical Center, in Somers Point, received a $550,000 Emergency Rural Health Care grant for the creation of an infectious disease, 10-bed isolation unit in its Emergency Department.
The grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture is part of the agency’s ongoing commitment to quality health care in rural areas.
Rural Development Deputy Under Secretary Farad Ahmad announced the grant at a press conference Feb. 24.
Ahmad said, “The past nearly three years have taught us of the critical need to invest in our rural health care infrastructure and of the impact that accessible, quality health care has on the well-being of our neighbors living in small towns.”
The new free-standing isolation unit will be equipped with a negative pressure air handling system for Covid outbreaks or any future similar pandemic, an agency release said.
As Covid fades from the news as an immediate threat to national health, the experience of the pandemic is driving preparedness actions for better control of infectious diseases in hospital settings.
