STONE HARBOR — Vacant lot at 96th Street and Third Avenue, along the Shelter Haven Basin, got a makeover today.
Borough workers were spotted doing landscaping work on the vacant lot at 96th Street and Third Avenue in Stone Harbor the afternoon of May 27.
Prior to the improvements, tall grass stood nearly 5-foot high and was visible from the street.
Now, the chain-link fence has been taken down and pedestrians can access the park.
Mulch was laid around trees and the grass was cut.
A fence separates visitors from the water.
Borough Council voted to lease the vacant lot at its meeting May 19 from Owner Dr. John Sprandio for the summer season to make some minor improvements for a basin-side park using donations from local businesses and organizations.
Mayor Suzanne Walters said she has about $2,500 in donations including $1,000 from the Realty Owners Association (ROA) and expected contributions from Atlantic City Electric, Comcast and Verizon.
Walters said she would like to have family-friendly gatherings, like outdoor music and movies, at the park throughout the summer.
Construction of the Shelter Haven Resort, with hotel, restaurant and day spa, is expected to begin this fall.
