Scottish Authorities Release Pan Am Bomber; LoBiondo Reacts

By Herald Staff

Scottish Authorities release Abdel Basset Mohamed al-Megrahi, Convicted Bomber of 1988’s Pan Am Flight 103
MAYS LANDING – U.S. Rep. Frank A. LoBiondo (R-2nd) on Thursday, Aug. 20 issued the following statement upon the decision of Scottish justice authorities to release Abdel Basset Mohamed al-Megrahi, who was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for his role in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, which blew up over Lockerbie, Scotland on Dec. 21, 1988.
“The decision to release Megrahi, disregard his life sentence, and return him to Libya rightly infuriates the families and friends of the 270 people who lost their lives because of his terrorist actions.
“It is a deeply flawed and inexcusable decision by the Scottish government to show greater compassion for a convicted terrorist rather than the hundreds of individuals, including those in South Jersey, whose lives were shattered and forever changed by that day. My heart goes out to the victims’ families – like Susan and Dan Cohen of Cape May Court House who lost their daughter Theodora – as they are forced to relive that pain again today.”
