CREST HAVEN – Rock salt isn’t glamorous. It hasn’t changed in millions of years. Thus it gets no attention until snow falls and roads become slippery. Then the crunchy stuff is deemed to be worth every penny that county and local governments pay for it.
There have been years when winter’s worst had made rock salt a highly prized commodity when demand outstripped supply.
In anticipation of the county’s and 15 municipalities’ needs for rock salt, county Purchasing Agent Kevin Lare reported to freeholders Sept. 29 the county was notified that its rock salt contract would experience a 13 percent price reduction. That translates to a new bid price of $64.75 per ton, down from $73.52 a ton.
Lare noted the state contract price, which municipalities are free to use if they choose, is $75 per ton.
“This is one of those silent, largely unnoticed services the freeholders provide that have real tangible benefits for the municipalities,” Lare wrote.
A resolution to accept the bid and award a contract is expected to be on the agenda of the Oct. 11 meeting, which takes place at 7 p.m. at the county Administration Building, 4 Moore Road, Court House.
