WILDWOOD – Cape May County advises travelers that, as of May 21, new traffic patterns will be implemented on Rio Grande Avenue (C.R. 661) from the George Redding Bridge to Arctic Avenue to accommodate ongoing construction. This traffic pattern is expected to remain in place over the Memorial Day weekend and into the week of May 25.
According to a release, Rio Grande Avenue will accommodate two lanes of traffic in the east and west directions from the George Redding Bridge through the construction zone to Artic Avenue. Also, a center turning lane will now be available to motorists along this section of the roadway. However, traffic signals have not been installed at the Susquehanna Avenue and Park Boulevard intersections, therefore both intersections will have limited access.
Motorists heading east toward Susquehanna Avenue and wishing to continue to areas south of Rio Grande Avenue, including Wildwood Crest, are encouraged to take the south exit ramp at Susquehanna Avenue onto Lake Drive and continue to Hand Avenue east to Park Boulevard.
Park Boulevard will be closed to north and southbound traffic at the Rio Grande Intersection. Traffic drums will be placed to prevent motorists from entering Rio Grande Avenue off of Park Boulevard. There will be no left turns permitted along Rio Grande Avenue at the Park Boulevard intersection. The left-turn lanes will be drummed off, as well.
Northbound Park Boulevard traffic wishing to continue north will be detoured to West Hand Avenue to New Jersey Avenue to West Taylor back to Park Boulevard. Southbound Park Boulevard traffic wishing to continue traveling south will be detoured to West Andrews Avenue to New Jersey Avenue to West Leaming Avenue to Park Boulevard.
Hand Avenue will be opened to two-way traffic from Park Boulevard to Lake Drive; however, westbound traffic will not be permitted to turn right onto Susquehanna Avenue. Motorists will not be able to access Rio Grande Avenue by heading north on Susquehanna Avenue. Similarly, southbound Susquehanna Avenue traffic heading toward Rio Grande Avenue will not be permitted to cross Rio Grande Avenue or make a left turn onto Rio Grande Avenue to head east.
Motorists will be permitted to turn right onto Rio Grande Avenue and head west. Traffic drums will delineate the portions of the roadways that will not be accessible. All driveways for businesses along Rio Grande Avenue will be accessible and open to traffic in both directions.
