Resurfacing Improvements to Begin on Bay Avenue in Ocean City

By Press Release

OCEAN CITY — Construction for resurfacing improvements on Bay Avenue (County Road No. 656) is scheduled to start Feb. 24 beginning at the intersection of Bay Ave. and 14th St. The resurfacing improvement project will include removing and replacing deteriorated, broken or out-of-grade sections of concrete curbs, gutters, sidewalks and driveway aprons. The initial phase of the work will consist of installing additional catch basins and drain pipes to reduce the amount and spread of storm water runoff along Bay Avenue. As part of the concrete works, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant curb ramps will be installed at all intersections.
Cape May County Engineer Dale Foster announced that Asphalt Paving Systems, of Hammonton, New Jersey was awarded the resurfacing improvement contract by the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders on Jan. 28, 2014. Asphalt Paving will set up three separate construction zones in an effort to not conflict with the ongoing work in that area of New Jersey-American Water Company.
New Jersey-American Water Company has been replacing water mains along Bay Avenue from 10th to 18th Sts. in advance of the County’s Resurfacing Improvement project. The water company has been replacing the water main between 6th St. and Revere Place and should be completed in about a month. Upon completion, Asphalt Paving Systems will shift their operations to the section of Bay Avenue.
“While installing the storm drain pipes, short sections of Bay Avenue will be closed to traffic and traffic will be detoured”. The opposite lane of travel will be maintained. During the length of the project on Bay Avenue, motorists are encouraged to use West Avenue to avoid delays. Parking will be banned with the construction zones on Bay Avenue,” Foster stated.
“All work under Asphalt Paving Systems contract on Bay Avenue between 6th and 9th Sts. should be completed by mid-May.” New Jersey-American Water Company plans to replace the sanitary sewer pipe on Bay Avenue between 10 and 11th Sts. and westward on 10th St. prior Asphalt Paving Systems working within this section of Bay Avenue”, Foster added.
Freeholder Will Morey who oversees the Department of Public Works and Engineer’s Office, said, “The County was successful in securing federal funds to cover the construction costs. The federal funds were approved through South Jersey Transportation Planning Organization and New Jersey Department of Transportation. Urban Engineers, Inc., designer of the project, assisted the County by preparing the necessary documentation and securing the various approvals and permits for federal authorization of the project”.
