By Press Release

COURT HOUSE — On Thurs., May 4, 2017 members of the Cape May County – Regional Urban Search Team (R.U.S.T.) conducted a Confined Space Rescue demonstration for the Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company. The company is currently providing beach replenishment to the Boroughs of Avalon and Stone Harbor. Employees of the company may at times enter confined spaces on the barge as part of routine maintenance. While they do have confined space rescue equipment on-board, the company wanted a professional rescue response organization to explain all aspects of what occurs during a rescue incident.
“Barge Texas”, which is conducting the dredging, is the largest barge in the United States and can at any time have between 20-30 employees onboard. Several of the employees also live on the barge for two-weeks at a time. Much was learned from both sides who participated in the event.
This marks the very first time the company had an emergency response agency participate in such a demonstration in the United States.
Members of the Wildwood City and Cape May City Fire Department’s participating in the training included:
Chief Daniel Speigel – Wildwood City Fire Department Deputy Chief Ernie Troiano III – Wildwood City Fire Department Captain Mathew Johnson – Wildwood City Fire Department Firefighter Ryan Troiano – Wildwood City Fire Department Firefighter Rich Harron Jr. – Wildwood City Fire Department Firefighter William Szemchek – Cape May City Fire Department
