STONE HARBOR – “The world of recycling is in chaos.” Those words by Stone Harbor Public Works Director Grant Russ came during a March 5 Borough Council work session. Mayor Judith Davies-Dunhour initiated a discussion of ways in which county municipalities might be able to help each other alleviate sharply rising recycling expense.
For decades, the U.S. has been sending massive amounts of its recyclables to China. Since 2018, China’s National Sword Policy has eliminated most of the millions of metric tons of recyclables it previously accepted from Western countries. The U.S. recycling system is struggling to adjust.
In Cape May County, when the scramble to find new sales locations cannot keep up with the amount of recycled material, the result is more material ends up in landfills. Russ said this is increasing costs to municipalities.
