Pedestrian Walkways Created in Cape May

By Vince Conti

CAPE MAY – Cape May City Council approved two resolutions June 2 that will make pedestrian walkways wider in two heavily congested sections of town. The move comes as the council seeks to provide space for appropriate social distancing in areas that would otherwise have “unacceptable levels of congestion” during the summer.

The adoption of the resolutions means an immediate closure to vehicular traffic on Decatur Street, from Lyle Lane to Carpenter’s Lane, opening a through street that cuts through the center of the Washington Street Mall.

The second area impacted by the changes is Beach Avenue. The parking lanes from Decatur to Perry streets, along the north side of Beach Avenue, will be dedicated to pedestrian traffic and blocked off from the street with Jersey barriers. No parking will be permitted in the area designated for pedestrian access.

The side effect of the second closing is the loss of parking spaces in a city that annually faces parking problems during the summer.
