Online Tax Reform Petition Seeks Citizens’ Support

By Press Release

RED BANK – NJ Citizens for Property Tax Reform is a New Jersey nonprofit corporation based in Red Bank. On its website, www.njptr.org is a petition that may be signed for those who agree with its mission statement, printed below.
This is a petition drive to reform the property taxes in New Jersey.  Property tax is the number one concern for the people of New Jersey. Our property taxes are the highest in the nation. Our elected officials have been promising to fix it for the past 30 years.  But instead of going down, our property taxes have been going up. Left to our legislators, the situation is guaranteed to get worse, unless we, the people, do something about it.
Our goal is to get enough petitions to convince the lawmakers to take action. We propose removing the school tax completely out of property tax. The school tax, which comprises 55 percent of the property tax, should be paid by the state through income and sales tax and not by homeowners through property tax.
How can that be done? By applying the guidelines of a study done by the NJ League of Municipalities that shows that property taxes can be reduced by 35 percent by shifting half of the school tax to income and sales tax,  with minimal impact on those taxes. The remaining 20 percent saving will come from cutting cost, waste, and spending.
This proposal is the best way to achieve a long-lasting  solution to the problem, and it can be applied immediately. We are no longer interested in fake solutions like hard caps, soft caps,  freezes, rebates or any other gimmicks that our lawmakers concoct in Trenton.
If our elected officials don’t act on this proposal by Dec. 31, 2016, we propose to place the matter on the ballot in November 2017, so the people can vote on it directly.
This is a grass root effort coming from the people, not from the legislators. We intend to keep pressure on our elected officials until they either reform the property tax or until we vote them out of office.
If you are fed up with the broken promises of our elected officials and are sick and tired of seeing your property taxes go up year after year with no end in sight, this is your chance to do something about it.
Let’s do it together. Let’s do it now. Let our lawmakers hear our voices loud and clear.
