NORTH WILDWOOD – At the City Council meeting Aug. 2, 2016, the City of North Wildwood will be placing a resolution on the agenda requesting the Cape May County Clerk to place a non-binding question on the November general election ballot regarding a city name change. The resolution and the request for a non-binding question results from a group of residents that presented a petition to Mayor and Council at the last Council meeting asking that the name of the City of North Wildwood be changed back to its original name of Anglesea.
NJSA 19:37-1 provides that when the governing body of a municipality desires to ascertain the sentiment of the legal voters of the municipality pertaining to the government or internal affairs thereof it may adopt a resolution requesting the clerk of the county to print upon the official ballots to be used at the next ensuing general election a public question to be formulated and expressed in said resolution. The results of the ballots cast for or against said public question shall not bind Mayor and Council from which the resolution emanated, nor shall said results be taken or construed as other than an expression of sentiment of the voters, and shall be followed or disregarded by Mayor and Council in their discretion.
“I deeply appreciate our residents’ efforts to prepare and present a petition to Council requesting a City name change, and I believe through this resolution and the non-binding referendum on the November ballot, we will be able to gage the sentiments of the people, without making any hasty decisions or changes”, said Mayor Patrick Rosenello.
