NORTH WILDWOOD — In a continued effort to engage all members of the community, North Wildwood Fire Department Firefighters took the opportunity to participate in Read Across America at a local area school. To the delight of the students at the Annex school (St. Simeon’s) in North Wildwood, Fire Chief Dominick McClain, Captain Michael Blizzard, Firefighters Terri DelVicario, Bradley Ladislaw and Walt Belles, Sr. were invited into the classrooms to read to the student on the morning of March 1.
Fire Chief Dominick McClain reports that he was contacted by Brittany Hennessy, of the Wildwood Board of Education, to inquire as to whether the department was interested in providing a guest speaker to read to the children. Chief McClain was honored to be considered and thought it would be an outstanding opportunity to contribute to the education of the young.
Firefighters entertained the children by reading several short stories of various books. The children were particularly entertained by Chief McClain’s rendition of a Fire Siren and Captains Blizzard’s performance of an Air Horn where the children broke out in laughter. The children asked questions to the firefighters both about the books being read to them as well as additional inquiries about firefighting duties.
In addition to reading to the children, Firefighter’s DelVicario, Ladislaw and Belles instituted a short field trip to the outside parking lot where the children were able to see the equipment and climb into the Big Red Fire Truck of the North Wildwood Fire Department.
