North Wildwood 2013 Excellence Award

By Press Release

NORTH WILDWOOD – Mayor Bill Henfey and the members of City Council are pleased to announce that North Wildwood has been awarded the 2013 New Jersey Complete Streets Excellence Award.
“Complete Streets” refers to roadways that are constructed according to specific policies designed to ensure the safety of all who use them, not only drivers and their vehicles, but also all pedestrians including transit riders, bicyclists, and the mobility-impaired.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) was one of the first ten states in the nation to make Complete Streets an official internal policy, finalized it in December 2009.
At the 2013 New Jersey Complete Streets Summit on Oct. 21, the City of North Wildwood accepted two separate awards for the “City’s commitment to providing safe, ADA compliant and alternate modes of transportation and shared uses of our roadways.”
Some specific projects are: Surf Avenue between 18th and 26th avenues where there are parking islands and designated bicycle lanes; the balance of Surf Avenue with designated bicycle lanes; the beach bicycle/pedestrian path adjacent to the boardwalk between 15th and 21st avenues; the beach bike path between 5th and 15th avenues; 5th Avenue between Surf Avenue and JFK Beach Drive; and the seawall that provides over two miles of walking path with multiple ADA compliant access ramps onto the promenade.
The City’s recent grant provided by NJDOT to construct intermodal transportation improvements on Olde New Jersey Avenue and the reconstruction of the City parking lot at Olde New Jersey and Spruce avenues was also mentioned as an indication of our commitment to complete streets.
The first award was a plaque of recognition for the City’s adoption of the State of NJ Complete Streets Policy, while the second award was the Award of Excellence for the work completed within the past several years.
The City of North Wildwood was one of five municipalities honored with the Excellence Award for Work Completed.
Mayor Bill Henfey said, “Improving the roadways of North Wildwood has been one of the most important missions of my administration. This award validates our dedication to that mission.”
