TRENTON – Gov. Phil Murphy said at his April 29 briefing that state and county parks and golf courses will reopen May 2. Murphy said he was reacting to consistent reductions in COVID-19 hospitalizations and other key data.
The governor rejected the idea that he was bowing to protests and pressure from some lawmakers. His controversial closing of the parks was enacted April 7, after staff reported those using the parks were not observing proper social distancing protocols.
The easing of restrictions came on the same day that Murphy announced 329 new deaths in the struggle with COVID-19.
He warned that those using the parks must continue to employ social distancing. He also urged people to wear facial coverings.
Murphy promised to reconsider if people abuse parks being open. Murphy limited use to 50% of park capacity and said that playgrounds, restrooms and visitors centers must remain closed. The parks are reopening for what Murphy termed “passive recreation.”
