Municipal Alliance Warns Seniors of Scam

By Herald Staff

PRESS RELEASE FROM MUNICIPAL ALLIANCE COMMITTEE:
• A follow-up safety tip for all seniors, related to an incident that did occur in Cape May County recently.
• A person falsely identifying themselves as an attorney, called a family and attempted to pressure them into wiring money to him in Canada, because their grandson had been in a motor vehicle crash, and needed legal representation immediately. The caller instructed the grandparents, who may not have known the present location/actions of their grandson at the time, to go to Wal-Mart, and wire several thousand dollars to him, knowing the store has the service and is open late.
• The entire story was a scam, as the grandchild was not in Canada, and was not in harms way.
• Our message to Grandparents is to NEVER give out your personal information or, send money to an unknown source. If the call was unsolicited by you, it’s probably a scam. Do not allow strangers to play on your emotions, and fool you into thinking something happened to a family member.
• If you feel there may be truth to such as report, contact your family directly, to confirm the information, or reach out to legitimate government agencies (i.e. police, hospitals, Red Cross etc…)
• Any fraudulent attempt of this nature should be reported to your local police agency immediately.
• Out of respect for the families involved, specific information about the above case cannot be revealed. Thank you for respecting their privacy.
