SWAINTON – In anticipation of accommodating additional flows from developments, the Cape May County Municipal Authority awarded a contract for $328,000 to Quad Construction Company to increase water pumping capacity at the Rio Grande Pump Station at its meeting June 17.
According to a June 10 authority memorandum, Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority entered into an Interlocal Services Agreement with Middle Township in 2006 to increase average capacity of Rio Grande Pump Station from 486,000 gallons per day (gpd) to 825,000 gpd to provide service to Whitesboro, Edgewood and developments in the Rio Grande area.
Under the agreement, Middle Township will reimburse the authority for the full cost of pump station renovations, which were originally estimated at about $400,000.
CMCMUA has agreed to schedule constructions of the improvements so the station will be functionally able to accept flow from the Whitesboro pump station when the project is complete and certified for operation.
The Whitesboro portion of the project will ultimately provide sewage to about 321 homes and 12 commercial developments and is expected to generate 162,000 gpd. Phase one construction expected complete date is December.
Also, 200 of the 321 existing homes are expected to connect within six months of construction. Initial flows are anticipated at 85,000 gpd.
Phase two will provide sewage to 266 homes with flows of 84,000 gpd. Construction will initially provide 110 of the 266 existing homes with and generate about 30,000 gpd initially with construction complete in October.
However, flows from this phase will be transported through the phase one station so no additional flow is anticipated before December.
Executive Director Charles Norkis said the current design capacity of the Rio Grande Pump Station is insufficient to provide service for additional flows from Whitesboro projects.
The Wildwood/Lower Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility is able to accommodate additional flow from the township’s Whitesboro projects without modifications.
CMCMUA will provide some necessary work not included in the contract.
Quad Construction Company of Lumberton was lowest of six bids for renovation work.
