COURT HOUSE – For some time now, Middle Township has been putting its house in order regarding its constitutional obligations to provide affordable housing.
Following litigation brought by the Fair Share Housing Center, a nonprofit housing advocacy group given standing by the New Jersey courts, Middle reached a settlement agreement. Changes to municipal ordinances followed, with the inclusion of affordable housing components in two designated redevelopment zones.
Middle Township Committee took another step in the organization of its affordable housing efforts July 18 when it endorsed a Third Round Housing Plan Element and Fair Share Plan adopted by the municipality’s Planning Board in May. The Planning Board’s action and the governing body’s endorsement continues the municipality’s voluntary commitment to its housing obligations.
The Fair Share Plan is now an official element of the municipality’s Master Plan.
