VILLAS – Failing private wells in Del Haven, Middle Township, prompted Lower Township Council to pass a resolution at its Dec. 17 meeting consenting to the Lower Township Municipal Utilities Authority supplying water to the neighboring municipality.
The resolution states that the agreement will not affect Lower’s ability to expand its water system in the future. The agreement is for 40 years with two 20-year extensions.
In 2015, New Jersey-American Water developed plans to run water to Del Haven from Whitesboro. Projected costs for that plan proved too high, and an alternative measure to pipe water from Wildwood Water Utility to Del Haven was also hampered by construction costs due to distance.
Lower Township residents with new water hook-ups pay a $1,600 connection fee and estimated contractor costs of $1,000 to $1,500 per home to do the necessary plumbing to connect a home to the main.
Del Haven costs would likely be the same, as would monthly charges for water.
Connecting to the system would be mandatory for the approximate 950 homes there.
No timetable was given for when the water main installation would begin.
